Frequently Asked Questions

Are you in favour of all women shortlists / quotas / zipping?

Reflecting Britain was established by some of the most vocal critics of positive discrimination such as all women shortlists, as well as some of the most vocal supporters of such measures. The campaign has no position on any such proposals.

What we all agree on is that the Gender Balance Task Force’s strategy of encouragement, training and support has been a limited success, that deserves needs greater support, and that this measure should be broadened by establishing the Ethnic Minority Election Task Force on a comparable basis.

We do however accept that there is a legitimate debate to be had about whether such measures should be considered in the future, which is why some of the questions we have put to the leadership contenders have referred to such measures.

Why not just have one task force which covers both gender and ethnicity?

Because, while both are ultimately concerned with encouragement, training and support both are different issues which demand different approaches. It is better to have two seperate teams specialising in their own areas than a single one attempting to do both.

Well done. You’ve got all three leadership contenders supporting Reflecting Britain. Why are you still asking for people to support the campaign?

Because we want to help whoever the new leader is carry out this agenda. Unlike other parties, the Liberal Democrats are a democracy. As such, while the leader can lend his/her considerable political support to a project she/he cannot force something to happen and have sufficient resources.

We want to be able to demonstrate that there is widespread support for this initiative so that it doesn’t drop of the agenda as soon as the leadership election is over. One of the best ways we can do this is by getting as many people as possible to sign up to the campaign.
